This is backed up by 10 years experience as a trainer and many more before that doing my own training.

Whether you are performing at the elite level or playing sport socially it is important to train properly. Many national teams use predictor lifts to decide whether it is worth investing time and money in an athlete and to help with selection decisions.
The vast majority of recreational sports participants do not see the value of performing weight training, preferring to concentrate solely on sports-specific training. This seems to be especially true in popular sports such as running, cycling, football and golf, yet a properly designed weight training programme has the capacity to improve performance and reduce injury risk in almost any sport.
